Assessment of healthy eating index, serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D and zinc in prostate cancer patients with healthy subjects

In this study, 30 men who had recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer and 30 healthy men whose age had been matched with those with cancer were studied. Serum levels of 25 hydroxyvitamin D and zinc of all subjects were assessed. HEI was also evaluated in both groups using a 3-day food record. the results were reviewed and compared.
There was no significant difference in age, weight, BMI and waist circumference between the two groups. The score of all components of the healthy nutrition index was not statistically significant in the two groups and also in spite of the lower total score of the healthy eating index in the affected group, but this difference was not statistically significant. Serum zinc levels were statistically a marginally significant between the two groups (P-value=0.053). But the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the group of patients was significantly lower than the control group (P-value =0.046).
The results of this study showed that there are a statistically significant and marginally significant difference in 25 hydroxyvitamin D and zinc between the two groups with prostate cancer and healthy individuals respectively. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the score of the healthy eating index.
