Abstract:

Resorting to graves of righteous people has been common among the Muslims from the very beginning of Islam. Muslims do this for blessing and seeking help from the dead. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (the founder of Wahhabi movement) maintains that this act is forbidden and consider if a kind of Shirk. He mentioned the two verse from An-Najm surah (the verse 19 and 20) for his proof to accuse Muslims to polytheism. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab cited the Hadith “Dhat Anwat” under these verses. According to him, this narration is a good proof for being the act of resorting to the graves a Minor Shirk. While, if we have a glance to the views of both Shia and Sunni scholars, it shows that these verses is descended on the pagans and not for Muslims visiting the graves. Also, The Hadith “Dhat Anwat” is related to the verse 138 from the Araf surah and the verse 108 from surah Al-Baqarah. These verses refer to worshipping idols by Bani Israel. Therefore, The Hadith “Dhat Anwat”  has no connection with the visiting the graves by the Muslims and we can not use it to refute the legitimacy of visiting the graves.
