Phenomenology of self-immolation among women with the experience of incestuous marriage: a case study of the Bakhtiari tribe, Khuzestan province

The aim of the current research was to study the phenomenology of self-immolation among women with the experience of a bloody marriage.

The method of the current research was a qualitative phenomenological type. The study sample consisted of 30 married women aged 18 to 50 from Khuzestan province who experienced self-immolation in 2019, whose marriages were based on consanguinity, and were selected through purposive sampling until saturation. Then a semi-structured interview was conducted with them, and finally the interviews were implemented word for word and analyzed using interpretative phenomenology.

In this study, 3 main themes and several sub-themes were identified: 1) emotions, such as anger, humiliation, hatred and despair; 2) Communication with acquaintances, such as communication with spouse's family, communication with friends and relatives, and communication with one's family and 3) Communication with spouse, such as emotional relationship, sexual relationship, and physical relationship.

According to the findings, it can be said that self-immolation is influenced by the communication characteristics and emotions of the marital relationship; Therefore, it is necessary to provide a support system for people with psychological problems with forced marriage.
