Investigating the phonological process of consonants’ assimilation in Kalhori Kurdish dialect based on the optimality theory

Abstract:

In this research, the phonological process of consonants' assimilation in Kalhori Kurdish dialect has been analyzed and described in the framework of the optimality theory and various types of consonants' assimilation in this dialect have been analyzed and described. The current research is of a descriptive analytical type and the data related to this research was obtained through interviews with the native speakers of the Kalhari Kurdish dialect and using the linguistic knowledge and intuition of the authors who are native speakers of this dialect. The results indicate that in the Kalhori dialect, the phonological process is the assimilation of consonants in the form of nasal place assimilation, which includes the conversion of coronal nasal to labial, prepalatal, palatal and uvular, and the assimilation of stop coronal voiced with coronal nasal and the assimilation of consonants stop coronal voiceless with fricative coronal voiceless. And according to the order of constraints in the optimality theory can be analyzed assimilation process in this dialect.
