Abstract:
Born in 1964, Eric Chevillard is a French writer who has devoted himself entirely to literature. His first book entitled Mourir d’enrhume was published by Editions de Minuit in 1987. Three years later, Chevillard demonstrated his stylistic audacity in Palafox (1990). This article studies Eric Chevillard’s writing and his use of humor in Le Vaillant Petit Tailleur and L’Autofictif. This paper seeks to find out what type of humor he demonstrates and what purpose it serves. Chevillard’s works are often described as playful novels, which will be examined on the basis of three points. First, we will examine how in L’Autofictif, Chevillard associates the content with form, using fragmentary writing. Furthermore, studying Le Vaillant Petit Tailleur, we will discuss the artist’s ability to connect digression with language, and finally we will show how the tale is subverted in order to become a playful story.
