Abstract:
Attributing any hadith to the Prophet (pbuh) requires the existence of Sanad for that hadith. If no Sanad is found in the tradition for that hadith, its attribution to the Prophet is not correct. In the science of hadith, traditions that are not found in any of the ancient sources and traditional collections of the two sects are referred to as "lā aṣl lah" which means baseless traditions. Mystics and philosophers, regardless of this important rule, have attributed a multitude of baseless traditions to the Prophet, that refining these hadiths requires a great deal of effort. One of these baseless traditions is the phrase "mūtū qabl an tamūtū" which has been used as a prophetic hadith by mystics and philosophers in various mystical and philosophical sources. This phrase has not been mentioned in any of the authentic sources of Shiite and Sunni tradition, and the lack of attention of the traditionists to this phrase makes it as a defective hadith.
