Predicting academic engagement and academic optimism based on dark personality traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopath)

Today, the role of personality traits is considered as one of the most important items in the success, progress and academic failure of students. In this regard, the purpose of the present research was to predict academic conflict, academic optimism, based on dark personality traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism, antisocial) in high school students. The research population consists of all the students (girls and boys) of the second secondary school (10th, 11th and 12th grade) of district 18 of Tehran city (8244 people) who were studying in 1401-1402. According to Morgan's table, a sample size equal to 368 people (202 girls, 166 boys) was selected as a sample based on cluster random method. Then, Appleton et al.'s academic involvement questionnaire, student's academic optimism (Shan-Moran, Bankole, Michel and Moore) and dark personality (Johnson and Webster) were completed by each subject. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics, significance test of correlation coefficients, and step-by-step regression. The findings showed that there was a negative and significant correlation between academic engagement, academic optimism and dark personality traits (-0.754, -0.779 respectively), similarly the results showed that dark personality traits ( Machiavellianism, psychopath, narcissist) can predict conflict variables, optimism at the 95% level and the direction of the relationship is reversed, so it can be concluded that dark personality traits (Machiavellianism, psychopathic, narcissistic) It affects the mentioned educational variables
