Association between IL-4 Gene VNTR Polymorphism and Type 2 Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent disease affecting a large population worldwide. Inflammation plays a crucial role in the development and progression of this disease. Interleukin-4 (IL-4) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine that can reduce inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between IL-4 gene VNTR polymorphism and type 2 diabetes in Gonabad city, Iran.
This study was a case-control study. One hundred individuals who referred to Alameh Behlol Hospital Gonabad city of Iran were included in two groups: case (patients with type 2 diabetes) and control (healthy individuals). The participants were randomly selected and entered the study after obtaining informed consent and meeting the inclusion criteria. Two milliliters of blood were collected from each participant using EDTA-containing tubes, and DNA was extracted using the salting-out method. To investigate the VNTR polymorphism, the target fragment was first amplified using appropriate primers and then identified using electrophoresis.
The mean age of the study participants was 61.98 ± 7.30 years, and half of them were male. The results of the VNTR polymorphism analysis demonstrated no significant association between IL-4 gene VNTR polymorphism and type 2 diabetes (p > 0.05).
In our study population, we found no significant association between IL-4 gene VNTR polymorphism and type 2 diabetes.
