The effectiveness of reality therapy based on the theory of choice in a group manner on the control of aggression and social adjustment of male addicts

One of the methods of intervening with addiction patients is group reality therapy, which awakens a sense of responsibility in them and increases the process of self-control in behaviors and creating compatibility. Therefore, this research was conducted with the aim of the effectiveness of reality therapy based on the choice theory in a group manner on the control of aggression and social adjustment of male addicts. This was a quasi-experimental research of pre-test-post-test type with a control group. 40 addicts were selected by available sampling method and were randomly divided into two experimental (20 people) and control (20 people) groups. The experimental group was included in group reality therapy sessions for 8 sessions of 60 minutes, while no intervention was done on the control group and they only received the routine programs of the treatment centers. Eysenck's aggression and Bell's adaptability questionnaires were used as evaluation tools in the pre-test and post-test. The data was analyzed using univariate analysis of covariance with the help of SPSS 22 software. The results showed that group reality therapy training is significantly effective in controlling aggression and social adjustment of addicts (p<0.05). The result of this research showed that reality group therapy can be the source of changes, including changes in attitudes and beliefs, in other words, this approach has reduced aggression and increased adaptability in addiction patients and can effectively help addicts.
