THE EFFECT OF POST-SPINAL SURGERY CARE EDUCATION WITH MOTION PICTURES DESIGNED BASED ON THE HEALTH BELIEF MODEL ON PATIENTS' ANXIETY AND HEALTH BELIEF
Patients who undergo spine surgeries need self-care to reduce complications and overcome post-operative anxiety. One of the new methods of post-operative care training is educational software design technology. This study aimed to determine the effect of post-spinal surgery care education with motion pictures designed based on the health belief model on patients' anxiety and health belief.
This study was quasi-experimental, with a post-test design conducted in Hamadan from 2021 to 2022. The statistical population included all patients undergoing spine surgery (except for the cervical area). A total of 122 patients were selected using convenience sampling and then randomly assigned to either the control or experimental group. The experimental group received post-operative care training through motion pictures designed based on the health belief model installed on their smartphones. The data was collected two months after the intervention using the Spielberger Anxiety Questionnaire and a Researcher-Made Questionnaire to measure the constructs of the Health Belief Model, which were confirmed to be valid and reliable. Data analysis was done using SPSS software ver.25. A significance level of p<0.05 was used in this study.
The mean health belief scores in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the mean anxiety scores between the two groups after the intervention (P = 0.958).
Teaching post-operative care to patients using new methods, such as motion pictures, can have a positive effect on increasing the patients' belief in their health after surgery. This can impact the results of surgery and the recovery of patients. Due to the lack of significant changes in anxiety scores after the intervention, further studies are necessary to explore methods for reducing patient anxiety following spinal surgeries.
