Prediction of Suicidal Thoughts based on the Difficulty of Emotion Regulation and Perceived Social Support in High School Students

Abstract:

Background and

purpose

Considering the growing rate of suicide of people, especially teenagers, and the conflicting results that exist about the nature of suicide, its causes, and its relationship with other disorders, risk factors, and protective factors; By identifying the risk factors of suicide in teenagers, preventive measures can be taken to prevent the occurrence of suicide, in this regard, the present study was conducted with the aim of predicting suicidal thoughts based on the difficulty of emotion regulation and perceived social support in middle school students of Kerman.

Materials and methods

The descriptive research method was correlation type. The statistical population was all high school students of Jazmurian city in the academic year 1402-1403, and 150 people were selected using available sampling method. The tools included Fleming's Perceived Social Support Scale, Beck's Suicidal Thoughts Questionnaire, and Difficulty in Emotion Regulation Scale. Data analysis was done with correlation test and step by step regression.

Findings

The findings showed that there is a significant positive relationship between the difficulty of emotion regulation and dimensions of suicidal thoughts, and a significant negative relationship between perceived social support and suicidal thoughts (p<0.01). Stepwise regression analysis showed that these two components predicted suicidal thoughts in students with 91% (R=0.910). Also, 96% of the variance of suicidal thoughts was explained based on perceived social support, and the support of friends and family showed the highest amount of prediction. Emotion regulation difficulty predicted 89% of the variance of suicidal thoughts. Discussion and

conclusion

The general results showed that the difficulty of emotional regulation and perceived social support play a significant role in predicting suicidal thoughts in high school students.
