The nature of intellectual virtues from Mullā Ṣadrā's point of view

Abstract:

Intellectual virtues refer to virtues that deal with various aspects of human intellect and thought and they are acquired through education. The present study is conducted with the aim of investigating the nature of intellectual virtues from the perspective of Ṣadrā's philosophy. The research method is descriptive-analytical. The result of this research show that from Mullā Ṣadrā's point of view, intellectual virtues refer to the character of people. They are acquired to actualize individual's true perfection. Accordingly, it is possible to consider psychical faculties and facilities necessary to achieve knowledge as intellectual virtues as far as they deal with human free will and are used in order to achieve true happiness and felicity. From Mullā Ṣadrā's perspective, the intellectual virtues have some specific characteristics. They are existential, gradational and volitional. They refer to the superiority and advantage of its owner. Stability, necessity and priority are also among the characteristics of this category of virtues.
