Gelled propellants

Abstract:
Due to their remarkable merits and wide applications in missiles, spaceships, torpedoes and air breathing missiles, liquid propellants have been used widely for many years. Gelled propellants are improved and developed liquid propellants that are made by adding a suitable gellant to liquid propellants. In this way, addition of energetic materials such as Al, Be, Mg, Br and etc, to propellants is made possible. This can cause an increase in specific impulse (ISP) and density (ρ) and ρ.ISP of the propellant which, in turn, can improve range and speed of the missile. These propellants are safer than both solid and liquid propellants. This paper examines the characteristics of gelled propellants, their advantages in comparison with liquid propellants, their importance and their construction methods. In addition, the significant evaluation parameters of gelled propellants and the most important gelled propellants are introduced here.
