Modification of the Technical Specifications of Traffic Calming Methods for Transportation of Hazardous Materials

Abstract:
A preliminary requirement in transportation engineering is to provide a transportation system with an acceptable safety level. In this regard, transportation of hazardous materials, due to the nature of materials being transported, is of high importance. Accordingly, the characteristics of the roads being used for transporting these materials in addition to the traffic calming methods should be particularly investigated. Speed humps and speed bumps would be categorized as tools for traffic calming which could be employed with or without other traffic calming techniques and equipments. These facilities would enable us to provide acceptable safety level, change driver’s behavior in a pleasant manner, control the vehicles, speed, and provide road users with safety requirements. In this study, traffic calming methods, especially speed humps and speed bumps are investigated. The technical and executive specifications are presented to provide safety for the vehicles containing hazardous materials.
