Cosmology of Remembrance (of God)
Author(s):
Abstract:
One of the key words in gnosis is “remembrance (of God), that is, remembering God at all times and in doing every action. Bearing this meaning in mind, Ibn Arabi defines remembrance (of God) as “accompanying with the object of remembrance”. The term dhikr is used to show the mutual relationship between God and man. According to Ibn ‘Arabi, there is a link between the remembrance and prophecy, because it is one of prophets’ duties to remind people of God. In other words, they are appointed by God to be reminders of Him. Remembering God necessitates realizing that His Oneness and unlimited and absolute reality is the basis of our thoughts, words, and deeds. This represents the real “worship” and “submission” which is regarded as man’s highest degree of perfection. In other words, remembering God necessitates actions, states of mind, and knowledge. This knowledge is not a theoretical knowledge; rather it is intuitive knowledge and real intuition of the absolute presence of God.
