The verse 6 of Chapter al-Tawba deals with the disposal of Zakat and it is one of the verses about which both branches of faith have expressed different opinions. This discussion involves a comparative study of the verse with reliance on the exegetical works of both branches of Islamic faith. The goal is to examine the points of agreement and disagreement of various Islamic denominations by going through the views and opinions of the scholars of the two branches of faith. Most of the scholars of the two schools of thought are of the view that "al-sadaqat" refer to the obligatory alms i.e. zakat. The acceptable opinion about the letter "l" (lam) with the word "fuqara" (lil-fuqara) is the very opinion held by Shiite, Hanafi and Maliki scholars and the letter "l" is to show where the alms may be spent. It does not mean that the possession of the property is transferred to them. When it comes to the difference between a faqir (poor person) and an indigent, it seems that an indigent is in greater need and in a more difficult condition than the former. The property given to the agents is not a wage; rather it is a means with which he subsists. The preferred opinion of Muslim scholars have also been mentioned concerning those people whose hearts are made to incline (to truth) and the (ransoming of) captives and those in debts and in the way of Allah and the wayfarer.

The Qur'anic researchers have always debated and discussed the miraculous nature of the Quran from different aspects. They are all agreeable as to the contents of the Quran being miraculous. However, there are some Quran researchers especially those who lived in the early Islamic centuries who maintained that the miraculous quality of the Quran is rooted in an external quality (i.e. preventing people from imitating and challenging the Qur'an). They believe that this is a much stronger possibility than any other reasons attributed to the Quran. The present study seeks to identify some of the most important proponents of this view known as the 'notion of sarfa'. Efforts have been made to mention any proofs or evidence that the advocates of this theory have put forth. As well, the history of the development of this theory will be given, and it will be concluded that those who subscribe to the notion of sarfa have overlooked the profound content of the Quran and focused their attention on the form and words of the Quran. Thus, it seems that this theory reflects none of the aspects concerning the miraculous quality of the Quran in the area of Quranic studies.

The exegetes of the two branches of faith have offered different opinions about the manifestation and meaning the term "salli" (pray) and "inhar" (make a sacrifice) in the verse "fa salli li rabbika wanhar". The opinions of Shia scholars about the meaning of "salli" can be reconciled with one another, though they look to be different apparently. However, Sunni exegetes have narrated irreconcilable, discrepant and contrasting meanings and opinions about the said word. Their views are also opposed to the narrations about the occasion in which the verse had been revealed. They also run counter to the principle of presenting the hadith to and comparing it with the Quran and the context of the verses. Most of the discussions that have taken place in regard to the interpretation of this verse are irrelevant and has been mistaken for some other concepts. It is inferred from various contexts that the manifestation of "salli" in the time of the revelation of this verse had been a "thanksgiving prayer" (namaz-e shukr). Any other manifestation that may be backed up by any convincing argument or proof is considered a kind of imposition of an opinion on the Quran. In Shia commentary works, such an opinion has found its way from the Sunni sources. When it comes to the meaning of "inhar", the exegetes of the two branches of faith have given contrasting opinions. The acceptable meaning for "inhar" is to make a sacrifice of a camel as insisted by some exegetes of the two schools of jurisprudence, and this can be evaluated in line with the Qur'an's confrontation with the ignorant Arab culture. Because they slaughtered a camel on the birth of a male child while the Quran asks the Prophet of Islam to sacrifice a camel on the birth of his daughter so as to nullify the discriminating cultures of the Arabs.

The practice of mubahalah (malediction or imprecation) has been common among people since time immemorial. However, mubahalah in this verse is unique and there are special qualities that are particular to the Prophet and the Christians of Najran. The household of the Prophet accompanying him in this event which entailed important results which both Shia and Sunni denominations have interpreted differently. Some Sunni exegetes accept it as a virtue while others have cast doubt about it when interpreting the verse. That is because the Prophet could take other companions with him but he took only five members of the cloak (aal-e 'aba) and this is a clear proof of the superiority and merit of Hazrat Ali, Lady Fatima Zahra, Imam Hasan and Imam Hussein (AS) over others.

This article examines the various aspects of the verse 7 of Chapter 59 of the Quran with a view to the comments and thoughts expressed by the exegetes of the two branches of faith. It is showing the extent to which those exegetes are convergent or divergent on their interpretation of this verse. Some of the differences existing in this regard originate in the jurisprudential, verbal, literary and historical approaches of Muslim scholars. What has been focused upon in this study is to deal with the semantic relationship of this verse with the verses before and after it as well as with the verses of Chapter al-Anfal. The outcome appears in three main areas namely, 'the indepenent', 'the mubayyan' (explicated) and 'mansukh' (the abrogated). When it comes to the recipients of these properties, it is yet another semantic aspect about which the commentators of the Quran have opinionated differently. The portion of Allah, the portion of the Messenger, the portion of the close relatives, and those of the Medinite residents, migrants and the successors of the companions of the Prophet (S) are some of the points of contention on which Muslim scholars from various denominations have differed. These differing views are sometimes due to theological tendencies and other times owing to literary inferences. The criticisms and assessments as well as the selection of the best views done by the author in this article are based on the prioritization of the findings that are consistent with the semantic framework of the Quranic premises.

  • Qualitative and Temporal Rereading of the Collection and Compilation of the Quran / (with reliance on Allamah Tabatabai's and Ayatollah Javadi Amoli's Views)*
    Yaganeh Qarabaghi Pages 139-156

The issue of collection and compilation of the Quran has been a matter of heated debated among Muslims from the early period of Islam as of now with exegetical works and textual reports referring to this at great lengths. Generally speaking, the importance of this topic is due, mainly, to the fact that some individuals and groups have exploited it as an excuse to claim that the present Quran has been tampered with and altered. This article using a descriptive analytical method has examined Allamah Tabatabai's and Ayatollah Javadi Amoli's opinions on the collection and compilation of the holy Book. The findings of this study is that Allamah Tabatabai makes reference to a historical event in which it is said that the Quran was collected and compiled by Zayd at the behest of Abu Bakr. On the whole he is of the view that the verses and chapters of the Quran were collected in three stages: 1- In the lifetime of the Prophet (S); 2. Following the demise of the Prophet (S) by Imam Ali (AS); 3. During the period of Uthman. However, Ayatollah Javadi Amoli rejects these narrations and events saying that that the Quran was collected in the lifetime of the Prophet (S). He presents his justifications to reject the other two stages.
