In Islamic mysticism as well as in Buddhist mysticism, the hierarchy of existence is explained in a longitudinal and descending order. In Islamic mysticism, the hierarchy of existence is established according to the theory of unity of Being and plurality of appearance in the form of essence and the five levels of existence, whereas in Buddhist mysticism, in the form of the three bodies: the Buddha, the first Buddha and its manifestations. Making a comparison between these two systems to explain the hierarchy of existence can, on the one hand, prepare the ground for a rational understanding of Buddhist teachings; and, on the other hand, explain the similarities and differences between them and the merits of each one. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this article explains the hierarchy of existence of each of these two systems; then makes a comparison between them. It concludes that, Islamic mysticism and Buddhist mysticism are alike in regard to the principle of creating the hierarchy of the existence of universe longitudinally and in a descending order; but they are significantly different in the content and details, despite the several points of similarities between them. The difference between the two lies in the fact that in Islamic mysticism hierarchy of existence is based on Deity and pure monotheism, but in Buddhist mysticism it is based on a kind of human deity or supernatural deity.

The problem of evil and its solution is one of the issues which has been the special concern of man for a long time. The book “Shikand-gumanig Vizar” written by Mardan-Farrukh is one of the very rare books of Zoroastrian theology and the author believes that his chosen religion offers a logical solution to the problem of evil, and thus violating monotheism. The present article expounds the correlation referred to by Mardan-Farrukh and explores the principle of justice, which is one of the most important foundations and concerns of the Muʿtazila school. Moreover, raising the objection against Mardan-Farrukh and analyzing the components of monotheism, this article rejects the idea of the mentioned correlation, stating that according to the Muʿtazila’s solution to the problem of evil, it is in principle, absurd to attribute evil to God and the sad and tragic which have divine wisdom and common good are to the benefit of the servants of God and a real blessing for them. Mardan-Farrukh raises the question of God's justice in the discussion about man’s evil deeds and their not being attributed to God according to Muʿtazili interpretation. The Muʿtazila’s solution is given approval by this article, which, rejects Muʿtazila’s solution by providing a new solution and an appropriate answer.

Man’s innate need for perfection and consciousness has led all religions to devise the way this position is attained; but it is natural that the religion whose teachings are fully defined by the Creator can choose the most convenient route. Divine existents are present and help the believers throughout. The present article, applying the Holy Spirit to Christianity and Simurgh to Islamic mysticism, has attempted to answer the important question as to what differences exist in their fundamentals and what fundamental similarities exist between the spiritual functions of the two for the sake of achieving believers’ spiritual sublimity. Two differences are noticed between them: the first is the Christians’ non-monotheistic vision of the essence of God, which has made the Holy Spirit, unlike Simurgh, be the source and possessor of knowledge and perfection, while Simurgh is the only divine ambassador; the second difference is related to the essence of these two existents—Simurgh is essentially a symbol that represents the world; but the Holy Spirit is a spiritual being, and sometimes, it is thought to have more than one symbol. The similarities between them are in the process of attaining perfection; both Simurgh and the Holy Spirit have provided the servants of God with every possible means to achieve perfection. But it is only those who have the capacity to achieve perfection that have this God-given gift. The ultimate perfection in both cases is to unite with that being; in the Holy Spirit, the exemplary behavior is to be totally devoted to the Holy Spirit; and in Simurgh, the end of the path is to be completely annihilated in the light.

In most religious traditions, including the Abrahamic religions, the issue of salvation is of particular importance. In the doctrine of salvation, repentance is regarded as one of the ways to achieve this objective. Given the position of Jesus Christ as the Savior and Son of God, the topic of salvation is extensively discussed in Christian theology and ritual practices. In the Orthodox Church, Christian rituals including confession and icons are crucial for achieving salvation and defining Christian faith. The present article carefully investigates the usage and connotation of the two basic concepts of salvation and repentance in the Old Testament. Also, the spiritual and physical salvation of the sinful is man has been examined through its descent and relation to Christology according to such prominent church fathers like Irenaeus, Origin and Anselm. John of Damascus—a prominent eighth-century theologian and the last Greek church father—has specific and influential views on the status of the icons the relationship of this subject with salvation as well as the role of repentance have been carefully examined in the collected works of this theologian.

Wisdom and wickedness in the symbol of “woman” has always been the subject of inquiry in Jewish tradition, especially when it comes to portraying women in prescriptive literature. This article which focuses on one of the texts of Qumran, namely 4Q184, expounds some of the functions of the modes of wisdom in Qumrani thought. The existence of the fragment 4Q184 in the Qumran manuscripts denotes the importance of this symbolic text in Qumran’s community and reflects the situation which this sect encounters. The Fragment of the Dead Sea Scrolls which has evidence derived from the Bible is analyzed in three semantic levels: the first is the level of moral teachings that had flourished in the long-standing Jewish tradition; the second is the level of the nature of wisdom, which, considering the goddesses of the wisdom of Mesopotamia and historical background of the Old Testament, has a theological literary motivation. By analyzing the historical context, it is found that the poetry in the third level is a metaphor for Jerusalem's divination which is, just like a wicked woman, involved in the act of seducing the pious. According to the belief of the false divination of the temple and false wisdom of Jerusalem, Qumranians left Jerusalem.

One of man’s theoretical reactions to the thirst for immortality is the “belief in the afterlife” whose most prominent manifestation is represented by religious literature. Mahabharata and the epistle of Arda Viraf are two classical religious texts that belong to Hindu and Zoroastrian cultures, respectively. Yudhishtira and Viraf, who basically symbolize man’s existence in two different religious traditions, experience and describe human condition in the other world in the form of a spiritual journey. Comparing and contrasting these two religious texts, this article concludes that according to both texts, death is inevitable, but undesirable—though, not in the sense of annihilation, but in the sense of a passage from one existential state to another. These two religious texts consider good conduct, good thought and good speech play an important role in human happiness, and the lack of divine essence and material bondage is ascribed to lack of insight. However, unlike Mahabharata which explains man’s end according to both the doctrine of Saṃsāra (rebirth) and the idea of paradise and hell, the epistle of Arda Viraf merely speaks about the dwelling in paradise or in hell after the separation of soul form the body and crossing Chinvat Bridge.
