Wellbore instability and drilling fluid loss in fracture formation is one of the main issues in deep drilling. In order to determine an efficient drilling methodology it is necessary to investigate the effect of fracture on instability and fluid loss mechanism. In this article in order to evaluation of the vertical wellbore stability and fluid loss in fracture formation, three dimensional simulation of a wellbore in the Persian Gulf was carried out using Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) and Distinct Element Method (DEM). In order to investigate the Hydromechanical mechanism in fracture formation, drilling fluid was injected by rate of 10 BPH and viscosity of 1.08 cP to the wellbore. Slip in fractures, shear displacement and the volume of fluid loss was determined as main parameters for wellbore stability analysis. The effect of in-situ stresses ratio (σ_H/σ_h ) on instability mechanism and fluid loss was carried out based on 4 different scenarios for in-situ stresses ratio. By increasing in-situ stresses ratio and in an anisotropic (σ_H/σ_h =2) satat, slips and shear displacement along the discontinuity increased. In this case, for 25 BPH drilling fluid flow ratio the fluid pressure decrease along the discontinuities. The parametric study for five different fluid flow ratio showed that in (σ_H/σ_h =1.06) the fluid expansion in fracture increased. Moreover, tension failure and shear displacement decreased in low fluid flow ratio. In 5 BPH fluid flow ratio, the fluid pressure in fractures increased compared with higher fluid flow ratio. This is because of less shear displacement and fluid expansion along fracture in lower fluid flow ratio.

Permeability is one of the most important reservoir parameters for reservoir expansion , indicating the ability of reservoir rock to convey fluid. Due to the heterogeneity of the reservoir, the permeability estimation is always calculated with a large error. To calculate permeability, this paper is divided into two general sections. In the first part, NMR relaxation groups(equivalent to hydraulic flow units or HFUs) were determined using nuclear magnetic resonance logs. The advantage of this method is to overcome the heterogeneous property of the reservoir. Relaxation groups were obtained using the FZI-Stonley method, in which petrophysical interpretation was first performed by petrophysical logs, and the rate of stoneley wave velocity in the rock matrix was determined using intersecting logs and mathematical relationships. The advantage of this method is to overcome the heterogeneous property of the reservoir. Then, permeability was obtained for each of the relaxation groups using FZI-Stoneley method. This is how petrophysical interpretations were first made by petrophysicals and the velocity of the Stonley wave in the rock matrix was determined using intersecting diagrams and mathematical relationships. Then, using core data and petrophysical evaluation outputs, the adaptation index factor for different minerals of each relaxation group was calculated and finally, using mathematical equations, the quantitative permeability was determined continuously for each of the hydraulic flow units concept. Relaxation groups were calculated. In this study, several IMFs were identified for each mineral, thus identifying facies (hydraulic flow units) and based on the hydraulic flow units for each mineral, different IMFs are obtained. The main advantage of the above method is that by recording the intrinsic property of the Stonley wave affected by the permeability, a continuous log of the permeability changes across the well can be obtained which also considers the heterogeneity of the reservoir.

One of the most challenging problems during drilling operations is loss circulation, which can result in wasting productive time and operation costs. Different studies and field experiences indicate that wellbore strengthening (WBS) is a practical approach to prevent or treat this problem. Plugging the wellbore fractures with lost circulation materials (LCMs) changes the stress distribution on the wellbore wall and fracture tip, leading to decrease the fluid loss possibility. In this paper, it has been attempted to introduce a poroelastic analytical model to investigate the effective factors on wellbore stresses based on fracture mechanics. The sensitivity analysis on different factors shows that geomechanical parameters (in-situ stress anisotropy), geometry parameters (LCM plug location, fracture length), and poroelastic properties (formation pore pressure and biot coefficient) have a significant effect on WBS. Based on the modeling results, the closer the LCM bridge location to the fracture mouth, the better strengthening can be achieved, and it can be more effective in the isotropic stress conditions, low-pressure formations and for a shorter fracture, due to less stress concentration on the fracture tip.

The influence of fracture network on quality of reservoir, emphasize the importance of study of fractured reservoirs. The characterization of fractured reservoirs is complex. We are going to study fractures of one of the oil fields of Persian Gulf by discrete fracture network modeling. Fracture modeling is often based on very limited well data and therefore is subject to high uncertainty. Typically, the standard modeling workflow uses interpolation algorithms to predict the fracture spatial distribution. This paper shows an alternative workflow for improving fracture modeling between wells through the use of seismic attributes. The main objective of this paper is to compare fracture intensity models guided by the two approaches: The standard interpolation based approach, and the seismic based approach using attributes sensitive to faults. The difference between these two methods lies in the way fracture intensity is modeled. Fracture intensity is an important fracture attribute because it guides the fracture simulation. It is estimated from the fracture point data derived from the well data and upscaled into the model. Typically, the standard method employs Kriging or Sequential Gaussian Simulation (SGS) to interpolate the fracture intensity of the 3D grid. This method can deliver highly inaccurate results in case of limited well control. The second approach tries to reduce this uncertainty, through controlling the fracture intensity interpolation via seismic attributes. Seismic attributes can be used as secondary input for the interpolation of the fracture. The preferred interpolation algorithm is collocated co-Kriging because one has full control over the radius of influence of the well data. In addition the influence of the secondary input, the seismic attribute, is controlled via its correlation factor with the well data. A comparison of these two methods provides insight into the complexity and uncertainty involved in fracture modeling.

A wide range of the effective-medium models have been introduced to explain theoretically the effective elastic characteristics of the sedimentary rocks. They are classified into two main groups: contact models and inclusion models. Due to the more complex pore-space structure, rock physics modeling of carbonate rocks involves more challenges compared to the siliciclastics. Considering the assumptions/physical basis used in development of inclusion models, they are of high importance in the context of characterization of the elastic properties of carbonates. In this paper, the theoretical bases, algorithms and procedures of four widely-accepted inclusions models of Kuster-Toksoz, Self-Consistent (SC), Differential Effective Medium (DEM) and Xu-Payne has been first described. Based on these four inclusion models, rock physics analysis and modeling has been performed on four wells from a heterogeneous carbonate reservoir located in South-West of Iran. P-wave and S-wave velocities were estimated in the depth interval of Sarvak formation, and the results were then compared with the measured velocities. The qualitative and quantitative analyses of the results reveal that Xu-Payne model compared to the other three implemented rock physics models, gives a better consistency between modeled and measured data. In particular, the higher correlation coefficient and the lower mean absolute errors were observed between the measured velocities and the simulated ones by the Xu-Payne model at all the tested wells.
