Knowledge on the spatial distribution of soil quality is one of the most ‎important issues in recognition, planning, management and optimal ‎exploitation of soil resources. In this study, physical, chemical and biological properties of topsoil ‎‎(0-30 cm) were measured in 50 fields (1650 m × 1650 m) in Savojbolagh region, Alborz ‎province. All of the factors influencing soil quality were selected using ‎the principal component analysis (PCA). The Weighted Additive Soil Quality Index (SQIw), the Additive Soil Quality Index (SQIa) and the Nemero Soil Quality Index (NQI) were quantified using either the total data set (TDS) or the minimum data set (MDS). Spatial variability of these soil quality indices were analyzed using geostatistical technique. In addition, spatial distribution of them were determined using the Ordinary Kriging method‎. The results showed that for the NQI index, the best fitted model was the Gaussian (R2= 0.93) when MDS was used, whereas, the exponential (R2= 0.79-0.99) model was strongly fitted to the other indices obtained from MDS and TDS. Furthermore, the effective range of spatial variability for SQIa, SQIw and NQI indices was 6-6.2, 2.7-3.65 and 4.5-7.2 kilometers, respectively. The NQI obtained from the TDS appeared to have the higher accuracy in the area (R2= 0.85, normalized root mean squares error (NRMSE) = 0.01). A large part of the area has high quality (class II) as well as to some extent areas have medium quality (class III) and very high (class I). Soil quality indices in the region were in moderate spatial dependence (0.31-0.7). So, the soil quality in the region is affected by both natural and external factors. Therefore, regarding the low organic matter as well as the weak structural stability of soil in the study area, one may expect that by implementing appropriate management methods such as adding organic matter, the soil quality will be increased.

Iran is located in arid and semi-arid belt of the earth and also because of drought, climate changes and mismanagement of water use; its freshwater resources are declining. Therefore, the need to increase water productivity is obviously rational. New methods of irrigation can be mentioned to increase the efficiency of water resources management. Management and application of these new methods of irrigation also requires studying the process of soil moisture changes and its availability to the plant. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of HYDRUS-1D hydrological model at two different depths using inverse solution method in relation to pedo-transfer functions in four-year alfalfa farm which irrigated with center pivot irrigation system. Therefore in this study, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm (as inverse solution method) as well as three parametric functions including Rosetta, Gorbani Dashtaki and Homaee, and Sepaskhah and Bondar were used to estimate soil hydraulic parameters in simulating soil movement and moisture distribution in HYDRUS-1D hydrological model. So, among the three parametric functions, the best function was selected and then the efficiency of the inverse solution method was compared to the parametric method in the process of simulating the unsaturated flow with the HYDRUS model. The results indicated the acceptable ability of PSO algorithm to estimate soil moisture characteristic curve and its hydraulic parameters. Also by evaluating the statistical indices, it was shown that by linking HYDRUS model with PSO algorithm, this model was efficient to estimate the trend of soil moisture changes. The best model performance was obtained in the soil upper layer with E=0.89, d=0.94 and R2=0.98.

Nitrogen and sulfur are the most effective nutrients in oil seed production, especially, canola. In order to study the effects of different levels of nitrogen and sulphur on seed yield, yield components, seed oil, and leaf and seed nutrients content of canola (Brassica napus L.) a factorial experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with eight treatments and three replications for two years. The first factor consisted of two nitrogen levels (N1=180 and N2=240 kg. ha-1 net nitrogen) and second factor had four sulphur levels (S0=0, S1=200 kg ha-1 powder sulphur inoculated with Thiobacillus inoculant, S2=100 kg ha-1 from ((NH3)2SO4 and S3=100 kg ha-1   from CaSO4). The results showed that effect of the nitrogen levels were significant on leaf nitrogen concentration, and seed nitrogen concentration and uptake at 0.01-probability level and seed sulphur at 0.05 probability level but was not significant on other measured attributes. Effect of the sulphur levels were significant on leaf sulphur concentration, seed and oil yield and seed sulphur concentration and uptake at 0.01 probability level and leaf nitrogen and seed oil concentration at 0.05 probability level. The maximum seed and oil yield, seed nitrogen and sulphur uptake, leaf sulphur and seed oil concentration were obtained from S1 level with 5069, 2135, 99.5 and 23.3 kg per ha and 0.95 and 42.1 percent, respectively. The two way interactions of nitrogen and sulphur were significant on leaf and seed nitrogen concentration. In general, the application of 180 kg nitrogen and 200 kg inoculated sulphur with two percent Thiobacillus inoculant would be recommended to achieve the optimum growth of canola in similar soils.

In this study, digital mapping of the most important forms of soil Iron were done using two data mining techniques namely Decision Tree (DT) and Cubist (Cu) models. The study area includes 500 km2 of lands from two different sites located in the eastern shore of dried bed of Urmia Lake, northwest of Iran. 131 surface soil samples were taken from depth of 0-10 cm and three different forms of Iron including i): total iron (Fet); ii) pedogenic iron (Fed); and iii) amorphous iron (Feo) were measured. A total of 19 environmental covariates (auxiliary variables) derived from the Landsat-8 OLI imagery related to July 2017 were used in this study. It was found that Cu model has a higher precision than that of the DT model for predicting all three forms of  soil iron with the values R2=0.89 and RMSE= 2.25 g/kg , R2=0.85 and RMSE=0.57 g/kg and R2=0.88 and RMSE=0.09 g/kg for predicting Fet, Fed and Feo, respectively. In addition, the results of the importance and percentage of contribution of environmental covariates in both models indicated the high importance of some spectral indices such as Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI) and Modified Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (MSAVI) in the prediction of Fet, Fed and Feo. Generally, the Cu model has a higher ability and performance in modeling and predicting the spatial distribution of different forms of soil iron in the study area compared to the DT model.

Golestan province has the first rank in Iran in terms of soybean production and area. Most of these areas are located in Gorgan County. Recently, conservation agricultural system is developing in this county. Considering the importance of erosion in soil loss and fertility decline, estimating the amount of soil erosion in agricultural lands is important. The current study carried out in Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, during 2016-2017. Soybean field were selected from four main directions based on five agricultural service centers. In order to 38 conventional fields and 10 conservation fields were evaluated based on Universal Soil Lose Equation (USLE). The maps of USLE parameters were produced by interpolation methods in ArcMap 10.3. According to the results, the average amounts of erosion were estimated as of 55.024 kg ha-1 per year in the conservation fields and 131.31 kg ha-1 per year in the conventional fields. The results showed that there was a significant difference between these two agricultural systems in Gorgan based on T test in the 99% probability level. Also, soil erosion map showed that the eastern part of the county had the most erosion amounts. The reasons of these results were the high rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility and the lack of soil surface coverage from plant residue. Generally, soil erosion was reduced with the implementation of conservation agriculture system, maintaining the plant residue in soil surface and reducing soil tillage. In recent years, modified biochar application has been receiving attention in removal of organic and inorganic contaminants, soil amelioration and production of biochar based slow release fertilizers. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of various modification approaches on physical and chemical traits of corn residue and common reed derived-biochar. For this purpose, chemical modification methods (using iron- magnesium- and calcium- chloride) and surface modification (using sulfuric- and hydrochloric- acid, potassium- and sodium- hydroxide) were used to modify common reed and corn residues derived biochars in a completely randomized design. Then, the characteristics of modified biochars including yield, approximate analysis, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), anionic exchange capacity (AEC) and specific surface area (SSA) were measured. The results showed that the highest specific surface area, cation exchange capacity and anion exchange capacity were observed in iron modified common reed biochar (217.94 m2 g-1, 111.43 cmolc kg-1 and 22.13 cmolc kg-1, respectively) and magnesium corn residue biochar (respectively, 210.83 m2 g-1, 137.40 cmolc kg-1 and 16.93 cmolc kg-1, respectively). Carbon content and C/N ratio decreased in the samples treated with acid, base and metal salts compared to the initial samples. Oxygen content, O/C and H/C ratios showed a decrease in in all treatments after chemical and surface modification. While the content of hydrogen and nitrogen in the acids and metal salts modified biochars were increased and decreased in the base modified treatments. In general, using various modification methods can play a very important role in optimizing biochar properties, according to the aim of its application in soil.

Phosphorus is the most widely used element for plant growth and development after nitrogen. Although the phosphorus content is high in soils, its bioavailability for plants is very low. Therefore, using biological methods to increase its bioavailability is very beneficial. In this study, 15 isolates of plant endophytic mycorrhiza-like fungi were used to increase phosphorus bioavailability in two soil phosphorite (5 g.L-1) modified Pikovskaya culture media with two concentrations of organic carbon (1% and 7% glucose) in three replications and sampled in four times. Analysis of the data showed that the release of phosphorus and calcium was associated with the reduction in pH of culture media. All fungi have the ability to release phosphorus and the ability of fungi was significantly higher in the 7% glucose concentration. The highest amount of solubilized phosphorus was obtained with inoculation of Aspergillus terreus, Aspergillus calidoustus, and Alternaria botrytis in the modified Pikovskaya culture medium with 7% glucose. The solubilized P concentration in 30th day of incubation was equal to 339.56, 334.19 and 334.64 mg L-1 respectively. Also, the highest amount of the dissolved calcium in the medium with 7% glucose in Aspergillus terreus and Aspergillus calidoustus treatments was 423.36 and 403.36 mg L-1 respectively. However, the highest electrical conductivity in the medium with 7% glucose was obtained in the cultivation of Alternaria botrytis, which was equal to 3.01 dS m-1 in 30th day of incubation. The amount of the dissolved calcium and the electrical conductivity increased continuously over a period of time for thirty days. This may dependent on the pH reduction and mineral P solubilization by fungi. The analysis of biomass P in fungal hyphae showed that the fungi with lower ability in P release in solution had higher biomass P. The highest pH and biomass P was measured in the Penicilium sp. culture medium with the lowest EC and solubilized Ca. The lowest amount biomass P in 7% glucose in Alternaria botrytis, Giberlla thapsina and Alternaria consortialis treatments. This study revealed that mycorrhiza-like fungi had different methods in release of phosphorus from minerals and increase of P bioavailability in soil that can be used in the production of biofertilizers.

Direct measurement of mean weight diameter (MWD) of wet aggregates in the laboratory is time consuming, laborious and expensive. The objective of this study was to derive regression, artificial neural networks (ANNs) and neuro-fuzzy pedotransfer functions (PTFs) to estimate the wet MWD in the northwest of Lake Urmia. Total of 100 disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were taken from 0-10 cm soil depth for determining some readily available soil variables in bare and agricultural lands of Shabestar region. The MWD of wet aggregates was measured by wet sieving in the laboratory. The data were divided into two series, so that 80 data points were applied for training and remaining 20 data points as testing set. There were found positive and significant correlations between sand and organic carbon (OC) (0.43**) and also between clay and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) (0.60**). There were found positive and significant correlations between the MWD with sand (0.60**) and OC (0.58**) and negative and significant correlations between the MWD with clay (-0.48**) and SAR (-0.57**). The results of PTFs showed that OC, sand and SAR were the most important readily available soil variables to estimate the MWD. The values of R2, root mean square error (RMSE) and mean error (ME) were obtained to be 0.84, 0.192 mm, -0.122 mm and 0.84, 0.154 mm, 0.030 mm and 0.87, 0.215 mm, -0.161 mmfor the best regression, ANNs and neuro-fuzzy PTFs, respectively, in estimating the MWD according to testing data set. Therefore, the performance of the ANNs in estimating the MWD was more than regression and neuro-fuzzy PTFs in the soils of studied region, since they had lower RMSE and ME values.

In terms of environmental hazard assessment, earthworms are ecologically important components of soil and considered as a biological indicator to maintain soil health and quality. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of Eisenia fetida earthworms in the bioremediation of cadmium in contaminated soils. For this purpose, this study was carried out on a contaminated soil sampled from the Ahangaran mine, 26 Km far from the Malayer town and surrounding lands. In this study, six soil samples were collected from 0-15 cm depth at different intervals around the mine lands and one soil sample (control sample) from the non-polluted area. This experiment was investigated as a factorial in the form of a complete randomized block design with the first factor of organic fertilizers (cow manure, carrot pulp, vermicompost, and control) and the second factor was existence or absence of earthworms. Twelve earthworms with 0.3 to 0.6 g were selected for each soil sample (300 g). The worms were exposed to cadmium-contaminated soils at concentrations of 1.159 to 6.658 mg kg-1 for 42 days. At the end of the experiment, the concentration of cadmium was measured in soil and whole body of earthworms. The results showed that earthworms have different capacities for absorbing and accumulating cadmium, which is the behavior of earthworms resulting from the diet of earthworms. The highest concentration of cadmium in the whole body of earthworms was found in all treatments at point S3 (soil sampled from the third point), which was more polluted than other sampling points. The addition of cow manure to other treatments also increased accumulation of cadmium in the soil worm tissue. The low concentration of cadmium in the soil led to the high bioaccumultion factor of this metal for earthworms. In this study, the amount of bioaccumultion factor for cadmium was more than one. Application of cow manure, vermicompost and carrot pulp treated with earthworms, significantly increased 1.54, 1.03, 1.38 mg kg-1 Cd in the organic fraction and increased 3.02, 2.79, 2.69 mg kg-1 Cd in the carbonate fraction. Extractable fraction, which contains exchangeable forms and carbonates and organic fraction, can be a good indicator of strong adsorption of cadmium in soil for earthworms. In general, the use of organic fertilizers with earthworms increased cadmium in the organic sector.

Sediments are the most important sources in the study of aquatic ecosystems. Bottom marine sediments are sensitive indicators for monitoring pollutants as they act as a sink and a carrier for contaminations in aquatic environment. The objective of this research was to evaluate the degree of heavy metal contamination in Kalan Malayer dam and the extent of sediment quality according to three indices. In this study, heavy metals such as As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Mn, Hg, Ni and Zn in 12 station were measured of lake bed sediments. Then, sediment quality was analyzed by calculating of geo-accumulation index, pollution index and enrichment factor. The highest amount of pollution index respectively belonged to As (2.520), Ni (1.225) and Hg (1.138). The results obtained from pollution index, geo-accumulation index and enrichment factor indicated that the As, Ni and Hg were high in 9 to 12 stations. Multivariate principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on the indices data, and two components were extracted which explain 85% of the total variance, and the eigenvalues >1. All heavy metals (except Mn) had positive coefficients with each other. The stations 9 to 12 were located near agricultural farms and the high concentration of some heavy metals in these stations can be due to human and natural resources such as excessive use of agricultural field, the intensive use of pesticides and the entrance of chemical fertilizers aquifers.
