Tur, son of Jahangir, known as Tabardar, is one of the heroes in the folkloric Persian pahlavani texts. Since the stories of Jahangir, father of Tur, are not very old, the accounts about his sons are naturally of recent time, concocted by storytellers and raconteurs of the recent centuries. Although the life-story of Tur b. Jahangir has been extensively recounted in versified heroic texts, his stories in narrative scrolls are scant, often mentioned in the Haft Lashkr’s wars. Nonetheless, accounts of Tur continue in certain texts up to the time of the battles revenging Bahman and Azarbarzin. Of the beginning of Tur b. Jahangir up until his heroic deeds there has remained a separate versified text overlooked so far by scholars. In this article we will first address the accounts of Tur b. Jahangir in Iran’s heroic texts. We will then introduce “The Story of Tur b. Jahangir” and examine some of its features.

By examining some of the socio-economical aspects of Persian poetry – especially the ways poets made a living and connected themselves to royal courts- attempt has been made in this article to identify some of the factors in creating poetical practice and criteria for official texts. It will be shown that certain uses made by poets did not follow their own natural language but conformed to the poetical norms and the standards of the official language of the time. Therefore, not in all cases can one determine the normal language of theirs and their time according to their uses in poetry.By examining individual cases of the application of the lexical item rūy/ rū, it will become clear which form/s of this item prevailed in the 4th-5th H/10-11 centuries. However, the main aim is to present rules and criteria that could be generalized to apply to other studies about the history of Persian language and its lexical changes.

The Persian monograph entitled Jāmiʿ al-ḥisāb (The Collection of Arithmetic) and attributed to Naṣīr al-Dīn Ṭūsī, is recorded in the catalogue of the Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia) Library under the title of al-Fārsiya fῑ al-ḥisāb. No mention is made of this work on Ḥisāb al-hawāʾ (a branch of practical arithmetic) and its attribution to Naṣīr al-Dīn Ṭūsī in any of the bibliographies and catalogues of old and new MSS. Ṭūsī has another book called Jawāmiʿ al-ḥisāb bi al-takht wa-al-turāb in which, by utilizing Indian numerals and an instrument named "takht" (board), he addresses Indian tradition in arithmetic. Although the two books attributed to Ṭūsī have similar titles, their contents differ squarely, following two distinct systems in their arithmetical approach. Jāmiʿ al- ḥisāb is mainly translated from Arabic, which according to the evidence provided in this paper, includes abridged Persian redaction from Ḡunῑyat al-ḥussāb by Humāmῑ Wāsiṭῑ as well as a number of topics presented in al-Takmila fῑ al-ḥisāb byʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Baḡdādῑ. The composition date of the treatise is unknown and its only manuscript accessible traces back to the late 8th-early 9th century-AH/circa 14th-15th century-AD.

One of the most important areas in literary research is the identification of the possible source or sources of a text. Besides its significance as to intratextual connections, such research can be of some help in removing the shortcomings that have pervaded the text concerned. The present study, which includes a comparison between a portion of Shir Ali Ludi’s Mer’āt al-khiyāl and Jāme’ al-sanāye’ va  ‘l- owzān written by Seif-e Jām of Herat, indicates that Lūdi has benefited from the latter work in compiling his tazkerah without acknowledging his source. Prior to this study, the only book that, according to its author, had made use of the Jāme’ al-sanāye’ was the Kashshaf-e Estelahāt  al-fonoun ( The Discoverer of Technical Terminology). It has now become known that 56 years earlier, Ludi had borrowed from the Jāme’ al-sanāye’.In another part of the present research, based on the Jāme’ al-sanāye’ some of the defects of the Mer’āt al-khiyāl have been examined and a number of the incorrect recordings therein corrected.

The connectedness between metre in poetry and rhythm in music has long been in focus. In the old books on music, philosophers’ tracts on poetry, old writings of prosody, and in the views of the contemporary musicians and prosodists, there can be seen indications pointing to a close link between rhythm and metre. Besides, in recent years, more serious and careful studies have been made on this topic. In the present article, the connection between īqā’,(rhythm) and aruz (prosody) mentioned in the old texts and the classification of the old views have been discussed and indications of inherent closeness of the two put together. In the end, an assumption regarding the etymological identicality of the two and their relation to the ancient Greece has been put forward.

Because the Shāhnāmeh includes the accounts of the happenings in Greater Iran from the beginning of creation all through to the end of the Sāsānid reign, it can be regarded as Iran’s most comprehensive national-historical epic poem. If the Shāhnāmeh is to be the basis of our historiography, then the story of the Garshāsbnāmeh is related to a nearly one thousand-year-period beginning with Jamshid’s wanderings and Zahhāk’s accession to the throne and continuing to the end of his rule and Freydūn’s reign shortly after. Therefore, it includes almost five hundred verses taken from the Shāhnāmeh that cover the events of that period. The identical meter of both poems and the topical interrelatedness of the two have led to the assumption that they are one and the same work. As a result, certain accounts from the Garshāsbnāmeh have been interpolated and copied in the Shāhnāmeh in the correct order of the events. The present article addresses this issue.

In a good many manuscripts and amended Divans of Hafiz, there appears a ghazal beginning thus: This ghazal, according to many editors and experts on Hafiz, genuinely belongs to him, and there are even a good few scholars who believe that Hafiz has written this ghazal under the influence of Attar’s story about Sheikh-e San’ān. However, Mohammad Amin Riahi is of the opinion that this ghazal has been unjustifiably added to Hafiz’s Divan. Also, in his edition of the poet’s Divan, Salim Neisāri has placed this ghazal separately among the verses believed to have been added to the Divan at a later time. In the present study, the aforementioned ghazal is examined based on two important textological principles: codicology and stylistics so that authenticity level of the ghazal becomes clear.

Of Devalrāni Khīzr Khān’s Collection, one of Amir Khosrow Dehlavi’s significant works, 4200 couplets were composed in 715 H./ 1315 and 319 couplets during 720-721 H./ 1320-1321. There are two manuscripts of this collection that were transcribed by a scribe named Darvish Mohammad b. Ali and were taken out of Iran during the Iran-Ottoman war. They are now kept at the Hakim-Oghlu and Hagia Sophia Libraries. The MS number 903 has Safavid Shah Abbas’s donation note and stamp; and MS 917 bears Safavid Shah Tahmāsb’s stamp. Of the Devalrāni’s Collection there exist two unfinished copies belonging to the years 720 H./1320 and 894 H./1489. However, MS 917 is counted as the oldest complete copy of this work by now. The distinct feature of the manuscript 917 is it’s a scholarly introduction in the initial pages of the manuscript by the person who commissioned the transcription.
The present article attempts to examine and reveal the codicological aspects of these two manuscripts.

There are no fewer than nine accounts of the story of Leili o Majnun in Kurdish literature most which have been written both in verse and prose in imitation of Nizami of Ganjeh and his emulators. Of these works four belong to the Kormānji dialect within the Kurdish populated areas of Turkey and Northern Khorasan, the composers, and translators of only two of them being known. But the other five accounts are related to the Gorāni dialect in Iran’s Kurdistan. Among the Kormānji and Gorāni versions the two composed respectively by Hares-e Badlīsī and Khānā-ye Qobādi are both more extensive and famous. In this article, by identifying and introducing the Kurdish versions of Leili o Majnun, attempts have been made to demonstrate to scholars both the extent of the influence of Nizami’s Leili o Majnun in Kurdish literature and make known to the scholarly community some of the obscure Kurdish poets and their contribution to connecting the Persian and Kurdish literatures.

Because recording Arba’in, an old practice in the compiling of traditions, is believed to yield spiritual rewards and promulgate religious teachings, it has been widely practiced among the scholars throughout the Muslim world. Sufis, who substantiated their views by quoting from the Qor’an and Sonna, paid great attention to this kind of recording traditions (Hadith negāri). The present article first examines the development of writing Sufi Arba’ins up until the 9th H/15th  century, and then attends to the three Arba’ins (called Arba’iniyāt) compiled together and with no mention of their relaters along with a versified translation by Qotb al-Din Mohammad b. Mohyi , this all scribed by of one of his disciples during his lifetime. After stating the importance of the Arba’iniyāt and its connection with Qot al-Din’s other work, Makātiib, we present the amended text of the Arba’iniyāt based on its sole manuscript, and then document the traditions (ahadis) by citing their original sources, Sahihayn (the two principal Hadith compilations).
