The US Policy towards Iran and Cuba during the Cold War: A ‎Comparative Study

Message:
Abstract:
The main point of this study is the US attitude and policy towards Iran (1979-1991) and Cuba (1959-1991), how this policy is shaped and implemented, and what are the similarities and differences when it comes to Iran or Cuba. This paper applies the historical-analytical method of analysis in the theoretical context of realism in international relations. In analyzing the cause for the hostile approach of the United States towards Iran and Cuba, common elements including the nature of international system, the post-revolution foreign policies of Iran and Cuba and the geopolitical position of these two countries are taken in account. Due to the key role the principle of 'balance of power' plays in the US foreign policy, the US administration perceives all behaviors opposed or critical to the current order or 'the status quo' as unacceptable. Therefor, in a general assessment there is no difference in its unreceptive approach towards Iran and Cuba. In this context, as this paper explains, the United States has utilized almost the same methods and instruments against these two countries: supporting the so-called moderates, instigating psychological war and political propaganda, applying comprehensive sanctions and considering use of military force whenever seen appropriate.
