Studying the relationship between accident rates and incompleteness of the road (Case study: Tehran-Qom road)

Message:
Abstract:
This study examines the effect of incomplete or deformed sections of the road surface on the traffic accident rate, by carrying out a case study of the Tehran-Qom road in Iran. Accident reports from the first six months of the year 1389, which comprise 426 cases, are studied in order to generate some useful conclusions that will be beneficial to society by reducing accident rates. The gathered data is analysed using the SPSS17 software, and the analysis of results show that 99.3% of accidents on the studied road sections were caused by men, with only 0.7% caused by women. The majority of accidents are caused by drivers in the age range of 29-38, with far fewer caused by individuals of an age over 40 years. The hypothesis testing shows that there is a significant relationship between the rate of accidents and the incompleteness of the geometric design, traffic signs, illumination, pavement quality, and width of the shoulder. The results of this study will hopefully be used as a guide to facilitate safe use of incomplete road sections, and to raise awareness of the connection between demographic groups and their likelihood of road accidents.
