Nurse's stressors in psychiatric ward

Without question, nursing is a stressful profession. Stress is a part of both direct and indirect caring roles in nurses. In addition to difficult patient issues that cause stress in nurses, administrative issues such as poor working conditions and unreasonable demands, siphon energy away from the nurse's primary focus, which is the care of the patient. Most of the research that exist on nursing stress focus on nurses who work in settings in physical health. It is equally important to examine the stresses in psychiatric nursing. This study was designed to determine the stressors of nurses who working in psychiatric ward Razi hospital, Tabriz. The instrument of data gathering was questionnaire. Stressors were mentioned include: 100% of nurses, inadequate staffing, 80% exhaustion about patients, 50% unrealistic schedules. 40% unreasonable family members, 20% incorporated other staffs, 20% unsuitable task and 20% peer conflict. 10% education demands, 10% personal illness, 5% lack or recognition and 5% inadequate compensation. Nursing is a stressful profession. Stress can lead to burnout, which is described as an exhaustion of physical and emotional strength. Many strategies have been suggested for dealing with stress and burnout. In our country general nurses are working in psychiatric unit and education of stress management strategies to nurses is necessary.
