Effect of Calcium Adjustment on Quality of Life in Under 18 Years Old ESRD Patients

With maximum well-being and comfort being key factors for improved quality of life for individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), the potential benefits of any health care provided must be weighed carefully against possible side effects or disadvantages. For those people living with the consequences of chronic disease, it must be understood that the types of medical treatment, availability of support networks and financial resources, environmental conditions, as well as personal attributes can each significantly affect quality of life. This is a cross sectional study that conducted in Alzahra Isfahan hospital in 2010. All under 18 years old ESRD patients were studied. At first, The level of serum calcium was measured for all patients and also quality of life was measured by pedsQL questionnaire. Then all patients were treated for calcium disorders. After intervention the level of serum calcium and quality of life was measured. Finally all data entered to computer and analyzed by SPSS soft ware. The mean + SD score of quality of life before and after treatment for calcium disorders was 34.8± 24 and 53.3± 23 respectively and no statistically difference before and after intervention is seen. (P=0.48). Although HRQOL is a useful appliance for improvement of quality of life in ESRDs patients but other variables such as economic status, family awareness and family health status is very important for improvement of QOL in patients with ESRD.
