    Objective(s)
To analyze the potential influences of propofol on the oxidative stress of H2O2-induced human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) Eca109 cell through mediating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.
    Materials and Methods
Eca109 cells were classified into 5 groups: Control group, H2O2 group, Propofol + H2O2 group, Dkk1 (Dickkopf-1, Wnt/β-catenin pathway antagonist) + H2O2 group, and Propofol + LiCl (Lithium chloride, Wnt/β-catenin pathway agonist) + H2O2 group. Western blotting was performed to determine the protein expressions, flow cytometry to measure the content of ROS, immunofluorescence staining to detect the oxidative DNA damage, as well as MTT, AnnexinV-FITC/PI, Wound-healing, and Transwell assays to test the biological characteristics of Eca109 cells.
    Results
H2O2 resulted in the increased nuclear and cytoplasmatic expression of β-catenin, reduced p-GSK3β expression, up-regulated ROS content, and induced oxidative DNA damage in Eca109 cells. Moreover, Eca109 cells treated with H2O2 alone had enhanced cell proliferation and metastasis but decreased cell apoptosis, as compared with those without any treatment; meanwhile, the declined Cyt C, Bax, and cleaved caspase-3, as well as the elevated Bcl-2 were also observed in Eca109 cells in the H2O2 group, which were reversed by Propofol or Dkk1. Moreover, Propofol could inhibit the effect of LiCl on activating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in H2O2-induced Eca109 cells.
    Conclusion
Propofol elicits protective effects to inhibit H2O2-induced proliferation and metastasis and promote apoptosis of Eca109 cells via blocking the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, offering a possible therapeutic modality for ESCC

A graph is said to be symmetric if its automorphism group is transitive on its arcs. A complete classification is given of pentavalent symmetric graphs of order 24p for each prime p. It is shown that a connected pentavalent symmetric graph of order 24p exists if and only if p=2, 3, 5, 11 or 17, and up to isomorphism, there are only eleven such graphs.

This paper presents a finite element analysis of the response of a grouted splice sleeve under tension. The connection is modelled in different bar embedded lengths (75, 125 and 175 mm) and sleeve diameters (50, 65 and 75 mm), and analysed by using ANSYS®. The results obtained include the load-displacement response, mechanical properties and failure mode. These results are verified with the experimental results, and found to have a variation exceeding ±10%. Nevertheless, based on the understandings obtained through modelling, the thickness and diameter of the sleeve can be reduced to 2.5 and 40 mm, respectively, to reduce the material cost by 60% without causing any decrease in the tensile capacity.

    Objective(s)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of chloride channel protein 2 (ClC-2) in glutamate-induced apoptosis in the retinal ganglion cell line (RGC-5).
    Materials And Methods
RGC-5 cells were treated with 1 mM glutamate for 24 hr. The expression of ClC-2, Bax, and Bcl-2 was detected by western blot analysis. Cell survival and apoptosis were measured by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and flow cytometry assays, respectively. Caspase-3 and -9 activities were determined by a colorimetric assay. The roles of ClC-2 in glutamate-induced apoptosis were examined by using ClC-2 complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) and small inference ribonucleic acid (RNA) transfection technology.
    Results
Overexpression of ClC-2 in RGC-5 cells significantly decreased glutamate-induced apoptosis and increased cell viability, whereas silencing of ClC-2 with short hairpin (sh) RNA produced opposite effects. ClC-2 overexpression increased the expression of Bcl-2, decreased the expression of Bax, and decreased caspase-3 and -9 activation in RGC-5 cells treated with glutamate, but silencing of ClC-2 produced opposite effects.
    Conclusion
Our data suggest that ClC-2 chloride channels might play a protective role in glutamate-induced apoptosis in retinal ganglion cells via the mitochondria-dependent apoptosis pathway.

Let C be a nonempty closed convex subset of a real Hilbert space H. Let Sn and Tn be sequences of nonexpansive self-mappings of C, where one of them is a strongly nonexpansive sequence. K. Aoyama and Y. Kimura introduced the iteration process xn=betanxn(1−betan)Sn(alphanu(1−alphan)Tnxn) for finding the common fixed point of Sn and Tn, where uinC is an arbitrarily (but fixed) element in C, x0inC
arbitrarily, alphan and betan are sequences in [0,1]. But in the case where unotinC, the iterative scheme above becomes invalid because xn may not belong to C. To overcome this weakness, a new iterative scheme based on the thought of boundary point method is proposed and the strong convergence theorem is proved. As a special case, we can find the minimum-norm common fixed point of Sn and Tn whether 0inC or 0notinC.

New development and expansion of cage culture at Batang Ai Reservoir would require investigation of the water quality. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the water quality at three existing aquaculture sites, one abandoned site, and one station without cage culture at three different depths. This study was carried out in October 2013 during the rainy season. Water quality was measured in-situ and water samples were collected and analyzed according to standard methods. Results showed that dissolved oxygen concentrations at the surface is sufficient for healthy aquatic organisms. However, dissolved oxygen at 10 m is not suitable for healthy aquatic organisms. All aquaculture sites showed significantly higher conductivity and ammonia-nitrogen at 20 m depth than the station without aquaculture. The aquaculture site that has been abandoned for nine months still showed higher 20 m chlorophyll-a and surface phosphate. Elevated surface, biochemical oxygen demand, phosphate and nitrate were observed at the largest and oldest aquaculture site. Based on the Chl-a concentration, the stations are classified as mesotrophic. This study showed that cage culture activities at Batang Ai Reservoir has impacted the water quality. Hence, further monitoring of water quality in the reservoir needs to be carried out.

    Introduction
Both primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and Wilson’s disease (WD) can cause copper retention in the liver, which is an important factor for liver cellular damage. Copper chelation may preserve liver cell function. It is challenging to distinguish WD from copper accumulation in patients with PBC. There have been few case reports of PBC co-occurrence with WD.
    Case Presentation
Here we report a case of PBC with WD in a 55-year-old Chinese male. In addition to the typical pathological characteristics of PBC and a large number of copper depositions in the liver, the patient showed WD ATP7B gene mutations.
    Conclusions
Co-occurrence of PBC with WD is rare, which can cause diffusely intrahepatic copper deposition. Early liver biopsy and genetic testing are necessary for the diagnosis. The combination of ursodeoxycholic acid with zinc and sodium dimercaptopropane sulfonate is effective.

Although the depth of the counting chamber is an important factor influencing sperm counting, no research has yet been reported on the measurement and comparison of the depth of the chamber. We measured the exact depths of six kinds of sperm counting chambers and evaluated their accuracy.
    Materials And Methods
In this prospective study, the depths of six kinds of sperm counting chambers for both manual and computer-aided semen analyses, including Makler (n=24), Macro (n=32), Geoffrey (n=34), GoldCyto (n=20), Leja (n=20) and Cell-VU(n=20), were measured with the Filmetrics F20 Spectral Reflectance Thin-Film Measurement System, then the mean depth, the range and the coefficient of variation (CV) of each chamber, and the mean depth, relative deviation and acceptability of each kind of chamber were calculated by the closeness to the nominal value. Among the 24 Makler chambers, 5 were new and 19 were used, and the other five kinds were all new chambers.
    Results
The depths (mean ± SD, μm) of Makler (new), Macro and Geoffrey chambers were 11.07 ± 0.41, 10.19 ± 0.48 and 10.00 ± 0.28, respectively, while those of GoldCyto, Leja and Cell-VU chambers were 23.76 ± 2.15, 20.49 ± 0.22 and 24.22 ± 2., respectively. The acceptability of Geoffrey chambers was the highest (94.12%), followed by Macro (65.63%), Leja (35%) and Makler (20%), while that of the other two kinds and the used Makler chamber was zero.
    Conclusion
There existed some difference between the actual depth and the corresponding nominal value for sperm counting chambers, and the overall acceptability was very low. Moreover, the abrasion caused by the long use, as of Makler chamber, for example, may result in unacceptability of the chamber. In order to ensure the accuracy and repeatability of sperm concentration results, the depth of the sperm counting chamber must be checked regularly.

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination is recommended for newborn infants worldwide to prevent tuberculosis. However, complications do occur inevitably in a very low rate, among which the most serious is disseminated disease. The disseminated bacillus Calmette–Guérin disease is a rare disease with high fatality, and can be seen among persons with an underlying immunodeficiency. We report a 4-month-old male infant presenting with recurrent fever, an isolated left axillary mass and swelling at the site of BCG inoculation. The cellular immune function analysis showed that the value of CD4/CD8 was 0.994, indicating the existence of immunodeficiency. The results of blood culture and throat swab culture showed conditional pathogen infection. He died of cardiopulmonary failure. In this case, necropsy played a significant role in the final diagnosis of disseminated pulmonary tuberculosis.

    Background
S100P is a member of the S100 family of calcium-binding proteins, and it participates in pathophysiological events, such as tumor growth and invasion. Based on the striking similarities between trophoblast cells and tumor cells with regard to proliferative and invasive properties, we raised the question of whether and how S100P expresses in trophoblast cells during development. This study aimed to investigate the expression pattern of S100P in the human placenta during pregnancy development.
    Materials And Methods
In this experimental study, we collected 16 first-trimester placental tissues, 10 second-trimester placental tissues, and 12 term placentas. The mRNA expression levels of S100P were detected by reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and quantitative real-time PCR, the protein expression levels were detected by western blot, and the localization of S100P was measured by immunohistochemical staining. The values obtained from PCR and western blot analysis were expressed as the mean ± SD. Levene’s test was used to test equal variances, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate differences between groups.
    Results
Protein and mRNA expression of S100P could be detected in placenta during pregnancy, with minor higher levels in first-trimester (p>0.05). Immunohistochemical staining revealed that S100P protein was strongly expressed in syncytiotrophoblasts, and moderate expression was detected in villous cytotrophoblasts and cytotrophoblast columns. The S100P protein was localized to both cytoplasm and nuclei in syncytiotrophoblasts, while it only existed in the cytoplasm of cytotrophoblasts.
    Conclusion
S100P was strongly detected in human placenta during pregnancy. The specific expression and distribution of S100P in human placenta throughout gestation suggested that S100P function might vary with its location in the placenta.

  • Isolated tubal torsion in the third trimester of pregnancy: A case report and review of the literature
Yan Sun, Ling, Ling Liu, Jian, Min Di
Isolated torsion of a fallopian tube in the third trimester of pregnancy is an uncommon event. Its common symptoms are lower abdominal pain, vomiting, and nausea. Because these symptoms are nonspecific, isolated torsion of a fallopian tube may be misdiagnosed, delaying treatment and the opportunity to preserve the tube. This is a case report of a primipara in her third trimester, who was misdiagnosed as having acute appendicitis and ovarian cyst torsion. The ultrasound-assisted examination was useful, but the specific diagnosis was made after laparotomy and histopathology. The patient was managed by simultaneous salpingectomy and cesarean section. This surgical intervention prevented adverse obstetric sequelae. We summarize our experience, provide our conclusions, and review 17 relevant studies from the literature to aid clinicians in understanding, diagnosing, and managing this condition in a timely fashion.

Wetlands are important spawning and nursery ground for fish and prawns. However, wetlands have been reported to be polluted in different parts of the world. One of the pollution sources is domestic wastewater. Therefore, in this study, domestic wastewater quality was studied at three major housing areas. Samplings were conducted in three trips. Results showed that pH ranged from 6.64 to 7.31 and temperature ranged from 23.5 to 31.7 °C. DO values were low, that is, below 3.5 mg/L for all trips at all areas studied indicating that it was not suitable for aquatic life. Nutrients such as ammoniacal nitrogen and soluble reactive phosphorus of the housing areas ranged from 11.1 to 17.2 mg/L and 1.05 to 2.43 mg/L respectively. Biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids concentrations at all the housing areas exceeded the Standard B maximum permitted values of Effluent Discharge Standard of Environmental Quality Act 1974. Loadings of pollutants from housing areas in Kuching were computed. This study shows that domestic wastewater was low in DO, high in oxygen demand, high in solids and nutrients thus loading the rivers with pollutants. Therefore, domestic wastewater must be treated before being channeled to the adjacent water bodies to avoid eutrophication in the receiving water and to recover nutrients.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/multi-nanoparticles composite hollow fibre ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were prepared with different compositions of SiO2/TiO2/Al2O3 nanoparticles in PVDF/DMAc/NMP solution by wet-spinning method. Behaviour of anoparticles on membrane dopes were evaluated by the viscosity and surface tension. By dding nanoparticles, obviously the membrane dope viscosity increased; however, the surface tension of each membrane dope changed inconsistently. The hollow fibre membranes were characterized by SEM, mechanical testing, TGA, permeability and rejection test, porosity measurement and pore size distribution. The test results indicate that different nanoparticles and their related compositions induce different characteristics on membrane morphology, mechanical property, thermal stability, permeation property, as well as porosity and pore size distribution, due to the different particle characteristic, the combination effect and the size effect. For membranes with PVDFM2 (18 wt% PVDF, 1 wt% TiO2 (P25), 1 wt% SiO2 and 1 wt% Al2O3) dope and PVDFM5 (18 wt% PVDF, 2 wt% TiO2 (P25) and 1 wt% Al2O3), the pure water permeation flux and bovine serum albumin rejection reach 179 L.m-2.h-1.bar-1 and 98.9%, 352 L.m-2.h-1.bar-1 and 89.1%, respectively; while their mean efficient pore sizes are 10.1 nm and 11.0 nm, and both membranes present narrow pore size distribution and other good performances.
