Effect of static stretching with different duration on strength and range of motion of wrist in female rock climbers

Message:
Abstract:
Background And Aim
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of static stretching with different durations on strength and range of motion (ROM) of wrist in female rock climbers.
Materials And Methods
For this purpose 10 rock climber females with the mean age of 20.1±5.26 participated in the study, voluntarily. Subjects randomly performed one of the 30, 60, 120, and 240s static stretching protocols, or control condition (180s rest), with 2d in between. Before and after interventions, strength and ROM of wrist were measured.
Results
Results showed that ROM increased after 30, 60, 120, and 240s static stretching protocols (p=0.002, p=0.001, p=0.000, and p=0.000); however, strength decreased in the control and 120s and 240s groups (p<0.01), and the amount of decrements were significantly different with the slight insignificant increment in the 30s group.
Conclusions
performing short-term static stretching during warm-up could increase ROM without negative effect on strength.
