Effect of He-Ne Laser on Orthodontic Induced Pain: a Clinical Trial

Background and
Purpose
Low level lasers have been used in dentistry to stimulate orthodontic tooth movement and to inhibit the pain during tooth movements. Contradictory findings exist on this issue, therefore, this study evaluated the effect of laser therapy on pain during orthodontic tooth movement. Material And Methods
In this clinical trial, 17 patients with extracted upper first premolars who required canine retraction into extraction site were assessed. In both sides canines retracted by elastic power chain and one side was exposed to He-Ne (632/8 nm). Laser irradiation was done on the buccal and palatal site of canine by slow movement of probe. The patients were asked about their pain intensity on both sides two days after force application. Pain assessment was done by VAS. Results
Pain perception during tooth movement decreased significantly in laser side (P=0.006). Conclusion
A single dosage irradiation of He-Ne laser (1.8 J in tooth) can decrease pain perception. (Clinical Trials Registry Number: IRCT138904022066N1)Keywords:
