Democratic aspects of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran
The cornerstone of democracy is public equality in the political and legal spheres that aimed to meet the legal and political demands of middle class in the past, especially in the nineteen century. Therefore, capitalism was the appropriate economic system for this ideology; but, this notion was spread and more considered in social sphere, and today has become a main topic in the discourse among states for achieving their goals, and public support is regarded the best justification for progressing rulers’ goals. Although in our country, democratic values such as liberty, equality, public participation, respect for rights and human values and right to self-determination, have provided good potential forces to apply this method of governance; but, there are problems either in some of Constitution’s articles or in practice that give rise to issues that are incompatible with democracy principles at a brief glance. However, by understanding the specific issues of Iranian society and applying the legal and social capacity, may become closer to this ideal.
