Pegs (asbāb) and Cords (awtād): linguistic units or prosodic units?

Quantity-based meter of Persian poetry resembling meter in Arabic poetry has led some prosodists to assume that prosodic feet in Persian poetry should be determined and organized according to the rules of cord and peg as it happens in Arabic. This wrong analysis could be due to the existence of many Persian words corresponding to cord and peg rules. This misanalysis has its origin in the fact that Persian prosodists have not realized the prosodic significance of pegs and cords and have treated them as linguistic categories. Given the recent findings about syllable, modern prosody have decided to draw on syllables, rather than pegs and cords to analyze prosodic structure. However, scansion and subdivision into syllables cannot replace pegs and cords as the latter has a significant role in organizing feet in Arabic meter.
