The Ashura Movement as Reflected in Sunni Historical Sources: Evidence from al-Bukhari, al-Tabari, and al-Dhahabi

The Ashura episode proved replete with highly valuable lessons for the world. As such, certain outstanding Muslim historians, who were Sunni, dealt with this historic chapter. Al-Bukhari, al-Tabari, and al-Dhahabi reported that Imam al-Husayn's movement was for the sake of Allah, all based on restoring freedom, justice, and dignity. He sacrificed his life ib this cause and gave an unforgetable lesson of self-esteem and freedom to mankind. The present study indicates that the above-mentioned historians had a high regard for Imam al-Husayn, giving him the title of the Prince of Martyrs (Sayyid al-Shuhada), and commemorate Ashura in certain ways based on their own conduct.
