Site evaluation of municipal solid waste landfill on wetland environment-Case study of Shadegan International Wetland

Abstract:
Municipal solid wastelandfill hasgreatpotentialto contaminatethe environment andhumanhealth effectsdue todecomposition, leachateand gases. Theeffectson theenvironmentifnotmanagedappropriately, will bringseveral damages on sensitive areas. Shadeganwetland is located in Khuzestan province in southwest of Iran. This wetlandis exposed to manyrisk factorsinternationally.Oneof the major factorsthreateningShadegan is disposalofurban solidwastein it. According to thedaily28.2tonsdisposalof solid wasteinwetland,ecological, fishing, economic values, settlementsandlivelihoods, it is important that evaluation ofselectioncriteriaof shadegan landfillbased onnationaland internationalenvironmental regulationsshould be done. This researchis based onfield studiesusingGISlayersaccording tonational and internationalregulations andstandardscarried outin 2013. Results showthat solid wastelandfill ofShadeganinconsistentwithnationalcriteria, butare morecompatiblewithinternationalcriteria. Overall, thelack ofconsistentnational and internationalstandardswas38.2percent. The mainparameterswhicharenotconsistent with Shadeganlandfill, include adjacent tothemain roads, water wells, residentialcentersandthe lagoon.
