The methodological impact of peripatetic philosophy on illuminitionist philosophy

Author(s):
Abstract:
During Suhrawardi’s time philosophy underwent an extensive methodological change. Suhrawardi played an unparalleled role in opening new horizons to Islamic philosophy, through applying a new methodology. Suhrawadi’s methodology was under the influence of different schools of thought but it was peripatetics that left a profound impact on it. Following a philosophical approach, the present article studies the opinions of illuminitionists and peripatetics with emphasis on their methodologies. Enumerating different impacts, it points out that peripatetics have left a positive impact on illuminitionists’ theory and approach and a negative impact on their theory. It shows how prominent peripatetics like Farabi and Ibn Sina combined between reason and intuition, inspiring Suhrawardi to leave a uni-methodological philosophy for a bi-methodological one using both reason and intuition. Thus illuminitionist philosophy did not emerge alongside with peripatetic philosophy nor is it the peripatetic philosophy but with minor modifications, instead it is the result of the developments that took place with peripatetic philosophy. It is thus an evolved stage of peripatetic philosophy
