Investigation of the Relationship between Dental Science and Islamic Narratives Regarding Oral Hygiene

Abstract:
Background
Oral diseases are one of the most common diseases of the modern world. Considering both Islamic and dentists’ perspectives, the best way to control the disease is having good oral hygiene. Therefore, this study aimed at analyzing the Islamic narratives regarding oral hygiene compared to modern dental science.
Methods
This review article analyzed some Islamic narratives regarding oral hygiene according to dentistry texts and articles.
Results
In this study, the researchers reviewed some narratives on anatomy and function of teeth, importance of disease prevention and oral hygiene, method and frequency of brushing, cleaning the interproximal area, and some benefits of tooth brushing (pleasant smelling mouth and increased memory). The results indicated the consistency of religion and science in this respect.
Conclusion
If the harmony between science and religion is explained to community members, their attitudes toward oral hygiene will change undoubtedly. This can be a strong motivation for promoting oral hygiene behaviors among the population and can decrease oral disease outbreaks.
