A Classification of Paintings on Islamic era pottery in Qeshm Island

Abstract:
In order to conduct a thorough and intelligible investigation of pottery, it needs to be classified. Pottery can be studied and classified in terms of the type of clay, paint, chamotte, the way it was made, the time it was made, and pattern. Since it is difficult, if not impossible, to provide a comprehensive classification which encompasses all of these aspects, pottery can be categorized based on each single criterion. The painted pottery belonging to the Islamic era in Qeshm can be categorized in terms of the type of pattern and we can investigate the kind of patterns on the pottery in this era. How frequent is each category? The present study, which is conducted as library and field research, is a descriptive-analytic investigation and categorizes the patterns on the painted pottery in the Islamic era in Qeshm in two categories of geometric and plants, each with sub-categories. A total number of eighty two pottery dishes were studied and the findings indicated that geometric patterns are dominant among these patterns.
