Media And Architecture of Future NAJA
Community-oriented police is an organizational philosophy and a management approach which promotes cooperation between the community and the police, active methods of problem-solving, and also the participation of all tiers of community in the identification of the causes of crime and other security or social issues. Media play a crucial role here. This paper intends to study the contents of eight popular newspapers using a quantitative content analysis method in order to determine first the images of the Police represented in these papers and second the papers’ approach towards the Police’s discourse. This paper studies the contents of 160 issues of these newspapers published during a five-month period from September to February 2015. The main findings of this paper show that most of the writings about NAJA in these newspapers we0re based on a traditional threat-oriented discourse. In fact, these newspapers paid more attentions to a positive and schematic discourse which brings about no visible preventive and restorative effects. Also, many of the writings create a traditional image of the police which follows a linear pattern of execution command. Media play a significant part in transforming the image of the Police from a traditional image to a community-oriented one. Therefore, the Police is required to employ communication strategies which redefine its interactions with media. The content must offer transparent information on the Police so that people could see the police beside themselves not apart. Moreover, in order to materialize a community-oriented policing, positive discourses must be applied more and the participation of civil and social bodies must be promoted for the sake of improving relations with people.
