Investigating factors affecting sleep quality in the elderly suffering from coronary artery disease
Human health has a close relationship with sleep quality and quantity. The aim of the present study is to determine sleep quality in the elderly population suffering from cardiovascular disorders.
This is a descriptive-cross sectional study which has been conducted on 147 subjects who visited Imam Ali hospital in Kermanshah city that suffered from coronary artery disease. Data collection was performed by Pittsburgh sleep inventory and Beck’s depression and anxiety inventory. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation test was used to analyze the data. Data analysis was performed by SPSS software version 25.
131 subjects (89.1%) had poor sleep quality. 84 ( ) subjects had a score between 5-9 which indicates mild sleep problems. 41 subjects (34.9%) had a score between 10-14 which indicates moderate sleep problems and 6 subjects (1.4) had a score between 15-21 which shows severe sleep problems. Average score for all test subjects was 8.29±3.36 which indicates that patients suffering from coronary artery disease have poor sleep quality. Our results also showed that age and education had no significant effect on sleep quality, while parameters such as gender, body mass index and psychological variables including depression, anxiety and rumination were correlated with sleep quality (P<0.05).
Discussion and
Our results demonstrate that coronary disease patiets suffer from poor sleep quality. Also, since psychological variables such as depression and anxiety had a correlation with sleep quality, preventive actions are required to mitigate these psychological issues.
