The aims of Imam al-Husayn's movement in the works of some Western Orientalists
The epoch-making movement of Imam al-Husayn in confronting the Umayyad injustice and his open and resolute refusal to recognize Yazid have since exerted profound impacts on and throughout the Islamic history. As such, his movement has repeatedly been studied by almost all intellectuals, including leading Orientalists. Many of them devoted their academic attention to this unique movement. Based on their works, a great majority of them have barely appreciated, let alone discerned, the truth of this movement, hence interpreted it in their works as a merely political gesture for gaining political power against the rival, opponent party.
