Hydropolitical challenges of large water projects in Sirvan catchment

Water consumption has increased significantly in recent years due to population growth, urban sprawl, agricultural development and industry. Taking Iran in a position of hydro-hegemony relative to Iraq and having a mountainous position, about eight billion cubic meters of water flows to Iraq annually. In fact, Kermanshah prvince has a regional position in relation to the western neighbor and in the local level to other provinces in better condition.  One way to reduce unemployment in the province is to control surface water for the prosperity of agriculture, livestock and industry. But the use of these water resources will have hydropolitical consequences, both internally and externally, the first example of which is the impact on Iran's relations with Iraq. On the other hand, the geographical location of these basins in the west of the country, which are more in line with the Kurdish regions, can provoke the Kurds in the region. The present study seeks to investigate the hydropolitical challenges of these basins and its consequences by descriptive-analytical method and to provide solutions for adopting appropriate policies on how to implement water control projects and observing good proximity at the local and regional level.
