Effectiveness of commitment and acceptance therapy on depression and Post traumatic growth in hemodialysis patients: A randomized clinical trial study
Chronic kidney disease and hemodialysis have adverse effects on the patient's physical and mental health.. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of commitment-based treatment and acceptance on depression and post-traumatic stress disorder in hemodialysis patients.
The present study was clinical trial with pretest, posttest and follow-up with a control group. Hemodialysis was performed on 36 patients referred to Imam Ali and Shahid Rajaei Hospital in Karaj. Which were available by sampling method and randomly divided into two groups: acceptance and commitment based treatment (n = 18) and control group (n = 18). The research tool was Beck Post Traumatic Growth and Depression Inventory. The intervention group received acceptance and commitment therapy individually in 8 sessions of 90 minutes. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance in SPSS software.
Acceptance and commitment-based therapy was effective in improving depressive symptoms and increasing post-traumatic growth in dialysis patients (p≤0.001).
Acceptance and commitment therapy can be used as an effective psychological intervention to improve the psychological problems of patients undergoing hemodialysis.
