Semi-active control of adjacent 3- and 9-story structures using type-1 and type-2 fuzzy algorithms

Abstract:

The use of control systems to reduce seismic vibrations due to dynamic loads has been an active research field in recent years. Damage caused by the impact of buildings in recent large earthquakes reveals the importance of improving and reducing the response of structures to these loads. In this study, to evaluate the performance of MR damper using type-1 and type -2 fuzzy control systems, two typical structures are investigated under seismic excitation with different maximum accelerations. The MR damper used in this study connects two adjacent structures at the third-floor level and is capable of producing a control force equivalent to 1000 kN. The voltage applied to the damper by the control system is calculated based on the amount of displacement of the two structures as the input of the system. In this study, the general approach of the fuzzy system aims to reduce the probability of collision of structures and reduce the seismic responses of two structures. According to the results, the control performance of the type-2 fuzzy system, which accommodates uncertainties, has been better compared to the type-1 control system. The risk of collision of structures using type-1 and type-2 fuzzy systems has decreased by 37.5% and 39.7%, respectively. In addition, fuzzy systems have performed well in reducing the seismic responses of structures. For example, type-1 and type-2 fuzzy systems have been able to reduce the values of maximum displacement, acceleration, and base shear in 3-story structure by 22.6, 8, 13.5, and 25, 7.5, 13.9 percent, respectively.
