Civic Education and its Intellectual Foundations in Farabi's Thought

Abstract:

The purpose of the current research is to explain the peculiarities and dimensions of civic education and its intellectual foundations in Farabi's thought. In this article, qualitative content analysis method is utilized based on the library document study.Based on this, the intellectual principles of Farabi's civic education were presented in two categories: general principles and specialized ones. General principles include anthropological princiles as well as those related to values; and specialized principles include sociological principles. Based on this, the goals of civic education from Farabi's point of view are to create and expand the correct attitude towards bliss (Sa’adat) and how to strengthen the belief in it among the people of “Medina(the city)”, to encourage people to act in accordance with correct beliefs and to teach the skills needed in Medina and the way of the correct cooperation of members with each other. Based on the remaining works of Farabi, methods such as argument, persuation, farseeing, model, artistic, and repetition-and-practice methods can be inferred to achieve these goals.
