Abstract:

The present study aims to formulate and redefine the concept of the theater market as a system of property rights by applying justice-centered theories of political economy and relying on three main approaches libertarian, contractual, and Hegelian. As well, the key concepts such as value, ownership, and material and intellectual rights will be studied. Furthermore, the analysis of the property rights system includes three parts the production phase (the rights of all producers; i.e. artists), the distribution phase (the rights of the distributors; i.e. the state or the theatre owners), and the consumption phase (the rights of society in cultural consumption). Based on the indicators obtained from each approach, their implementations in the theater will be examined. The next step is to evaluate the results of this analytical comparison by the central question of the research of how to define the concept of the theater market through the lens of political economy. In the end, the formulation of the theater market is obtained based on the characteristics derived from the justice-oriented approaches and the characteristics of property rights. The theater market is a market emerging from the society that organizes the triple relations of production, distribution, and consumption of theater based on the three principles of honor, humanity, and individual identity. This market comes into existence in a network of exchange relations with the government and the governing law of that society and maintains itself.
