Social Review of Women's Sports in the Olympic Games: Bibliometric studies

Abstract:
Olympics is a major sporting event that officially promotes "equality," "diversity," and "inclusion." It serves as a platform for female athletes to gain pride and inspire other women. The persent research provides a comprehensive overview of the social field studies of women's sports in the Olympics, as indexed in the Scopus scientific database. The data includes eighty-two articles published and indexed between 1984 and 2024. The analyses were conducted using the Bibliometrix-R software. The performance results indicate an average annual growth rate of published studies was 3.54. The prominent authors were mostly from developed countries, and Western institutions had the most collaboration in scientific publications in this field. The leading publishing sources were “International Journal of the History of Sport”, “International Review for the Sociology of Sport”, and “Sport in Society”. The co-occurrence of author’s key words revealed two clusters (media and gender) issuse within the structure of these studies. Drawing scientific map also generated five themes, including gender, media, religion, female athletes, and elite sports, in proportion to their centrality and density in the strategic diagram.
