An investigation on the phenolic compounds rates of some wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum) at different vegetative stages and relationships between phenolic compounds and allelopathy effects of wheat cultivars on weeds

In this investigation we studied phenolic compounds rates (allelochemicals) of some wheat cultivars and correlation between the amount of phenolic compounds and allelopathy effects of wheat cultivars. The phenolic compounds rates in leave, spikes and roots of 10 wheat cultivars (Atrak, Dez, Pishtaz, Chamran, Darab2, Shiraz, Shirodi, Star, Marvdasht and Tajan) were measured at different vegetative stages (27 days after sowing, tiller stage, initiation of flowering, pollination,seed maturatio, harvesting). As a result the amount of phenolic compounds significantly differed in various organs, cultivars and vegetative stages. The elevated levels of phenolic compounds (mg/g fw) were observed in leaves. Marvdasht and Atrak cultivars (in bioassay had the least allelopathy effects) had the least phenolic compounds and Chamran, Darab2 and Star (with high allelopathy effects) had the most phenolic compounds. There was direct relation between the amount of phenolic compounds and allelopathy effects of wheat cultivars.
