Iranian- Islamic Model of Progress, with an Emphasis on Indexes of Education and Hygiene

Some thinkers believe that the Islamic Revolution of Iran was a reaction to the rapid development based on the western model which was not in harmony with the cultural and indigenous situation of Iran. Although the Islamic Republic of Iran has achieved some progress in education and hygiene, it still lacks an indigenous model consistent with the historical, geographical and cultural requirements of the country. The present article aims to review the policies and advances in fields of education and hygiene in Iran after the Revolution, and offer a critique of these policies in order to develop a model consistent with the requirements of the Islamic and Iranian culture. The methodology of this study is descriptive-analytical and the framework of the study is the theory of religion-centric sustainable development whose central concept is justice. The results of the study show that Iran has been relatively successful in the fields of education and hygiene; in this regard the role of Islamic teachings and the cultural situation of Iran after the Revolution, is undeniable. Justice in providing hygiene and education has been promoted; however, some discrimination still exists. Statistics indicate there has been considerable progress both in education and hygiene. However, more attention should be paid to the quality of progress in these fields. According to the Iranian-Islamic model of progress proposed in this article, in the orientation of the policies in the future, firstly justice in education and hygiene should be fulfilled, and secondly the quality of education and hygiene should be improved.
