Evaluation of ainvay cale flom patients admitted to the intensive cale unit based on knowledge, attitude and practice of nUlses

Abstract:
Objective
One of the difficulties in all,vay management of patients in intensive care milt., is tracheal suctioning and mouth wasl~ Because ainvay secretions can induce risks for contamillation.The aim from care of the patient's ainvay is to prevention of infection upper airway and transpOlted to lower airway. Of the important items in the care of patients admitted in the reu is knowledge, attitude and perfonllance nurses for care of oral and airway care. This study has been done aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude and perfollnance of ainvay care patients in intensive care units in teaching hospitals in lIamadan city
Matelials and metbods: This study was a cross-sectional Shldy and the study population were fanned of all the nurses that working in intensive care lUilts at teaching hospita ls in Hamadan city. In tIils study~ evaluated knowledge~ attihldes and pmf0l111anCe of nlU·ses in relation to caring from the ainvay. The research instnunent was consisting a questiol1llaire and indiv idual perfOlll anCe list and answers was measlU"ed by Likert scale. Sampling were obtained from all 58 nurses that works in the intensive care units . Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics by SPSS software version I 6
Results
The study data show that the 13/8% nursing staff were male and 86n% female and they had between :::!2 and 45 years old.98% of the population had a positive attitude re lative to the care of the airway. 69% of the study population needs for improvements of oral and pharyngeal secretions by suctioning in work methods and their functions have been3 l % unacceptable. The study on the re lationship between knowledge and performance of the tracheostomy suction~ moutll~ throat~ nose and mouth with llSing the Pearson cOlTelation coefficient p-va lue respectively \vere 0109~ 0/62,0109 therefore the knowledge of the staff with respect to the p value rates had no significant relation.
Conclusions
Considering that none of the variables had no significant con-elations with each other and level of knowledge population shldied were well within acceptable ranges, it can be concluded that the ratio of lllu·ses to patients is greater than the standard value, which can cause increase workload and effective on their performance.
