Albendazole induces cell death in human colorectal cancer cell line HT-29

Abstract:
Background
It is a continuing effort to develop new anticancer drugs. It has been reported that albendazole has antiproliferative effects on several tumor cell lines. The aim of this study was to evaluate the killing effect of albendazole on HT-29 human colorectal cancer cells.Materials And Methods
Cultured HT-29 cells were treated with albendazole in 0.1, 1 and 10 µg/ml concentrations for 1, 3 and 5 days. Cellular viability and proliferation were evaluated by MTT and Trypan blue assays at determined days after treatment. Results
The comparison of cells count and viability in control group and treated groups with albendazole at different concentrations showed significant differences in days 1, 3 and 5.Conclusion
Albendazole can suppress HT-29 cells proliferation and induces cell death in a dose and time dependent mannerKeywords:
