Evaluation of Sleep Problems in Patients Admitted to Peymaniyeh Hospital in Jahrom, Iran: A Cross-sectional Descriptive Study Based on Demographic Indicators
Sleep is one of the basic physiological needs and improves the health and survival of hospitalized patients. Disturbance in sleep patterns may cause physiological changes during sleep and aggravate the symptoms of the disease. This study aimed to investigate sleep disorders in patients admitted to hospitals in Jahrom, Iran, in 2020.
This cross-sectional descriptive study included 130 patients admitted to internal and surgical wards of Peymaniyeh Hospital, Jahrom, Iran. Data were collected and analyzed using demographic characteristics form, Mohammadi Sleep Disorders Questionnaire, and descriptive and inferential statistical tests. A p-value less than 0.05 (p < 0.05) was considered statistically significant.
The majority of participants in this study were female (56.6%) and the rest were male. The mean±SD age of the patients was estimated at 45.16±17.79 years. Based on the results, the sleep quality of all patients was in the normal range; however, the sleep quality in 25% of the patients was unsatisfactory. The quality of sleep in patients was influenced by such factors as age, gender, and occupation. Moreover, there was a statistically significant difference in terms of these factors (p < 0.05). The response to the item “I wake up with the least noise” in the Sleep Disorders Questionnaire was positive in 73.1% of the admitted patients.
Based on obtained results in this study, the sleep quality of patients was in the normal range. The maintenance of appropriate physical conditions and the adoption of appropriate methods for having adequate sleep and rest seems to be necessary given the importance of adequate sleep and its impact on the improvement of patients’ health.
