Virtual Social Networks and mobile messaging platforms; Constructive functions and dysfunctions in Iran

Abstract:
Nowadays, most people and private and government organizations are largely dependent on Virtual Social Networks and mobile messaging platforms to carry out their affairs. With the expansion of communication and information technology applications in daily life, we are witnessing the formation of a new generation of Internet tools that provide more possibilities for bilateral and multilateral relations. Now the problem is, what are the functions and dysfunctions of Virtual Social Networks ?The answer to this question can increase the effectiveness or improve the approach of the media in messaging, as well as adopt a correct cultural orientation which is appropriate to Iranian-Islamic values and norms. For this purpose, the researcher has identified the functions and dysfunctions of Virtual Social Networks and mobile messaging platforms in Iran by using qualitative analysis in the interpretive paradigm along with interviews and used thematic analysis and three-stage coding. The research result are the followings:The most important positive and constructive functions: changing the shell of mentalities, facilitating the exchange and creation of information, criticizing and refining culture, effective discourse creation, promoting the government's sensitivity towards its own performance and preparation of the business environment.The most important dysfunctions: widespread social isolation, promoting immoral content, making the society vulnerable, creating excessive individualism, breaking the family foundation and identity disorder.
